Access Adriatic finds villas on the Split to Hvar coast and arranges the week around them, and this question turns up in first messages more often than you would expect. Every claim below is attributed to a named publication with a date. No guessing about who is where this summer, no addresses. What the reports are actually good for is geography: they show which water people with unlimited choice keep going back to, and most of it will take a normal group in a normal house.
Where do the famous stays actually cluster?
| Stretch of coast | Press reported examples | What it means for a house |
|---|---|---|
| Dubrovnik and the Elaphiti islands | The Beckhams on Lopud and Šipan, Jay-Z near Cavtat | Three to four hours from Split, hotels and boats, few villas |
| Hvar and the Pakleni | Prince Harry, Tom Cruise, Bono at Palmižana | Real rental stock, an hour from Split by fast ferry |
| Brač and the Split riviera | Magic Johnson, Rami Malek, Chris Rock in Trogir | The most houses and the shortest crossings |
| Vis and the outer islands | John Malkovich, Lily Allen | Very few houses, long crossings, nothing happens |
| Istria | Matthew McConaughey | Four hours north and a different holiday |
Dubrovnik and its islands take most of the coverage. Croatia Week put David and Victoria Beckham on Lopud on 13 July 2022, and on Šipan with Luka Modrić on 28 August 2023. Time Out Croatia put Jay-Z on a yacht near Cavtat on 24 August 2022, and Michael Jordan, Bono and Harrison Ford in Dubrovnik on 18 September 2021.
Hvar appears in almost every list. Total Croatia News, in a piece dated 20 April 2023, put dates on it: Prince Harry at the Veneranda club in 2011, Beyoncé on the island the same year, Tom Cruise on the main square in 2013, Bono at Palmižana in the Pakleni islands in 2016.
Brač and the Split riviera get less coverage and hold more of the actual houses. Croatia Week reported on 2 August 2020 that Magic Johnson arrived in Split on the superyacht Aquila and docked on the Riva, the boat later anchored off Bol on Brač. Time Out Croatia, on 9 September 2020, had Rami Malek and Lucy Boynton on Brač, and the July 2022 Croatia Week piece put Chris Rock and Lake Bell walking around Trogir.
Vis and the outer islands are the quiet end: Time Out Croatia, on 29 August 2022, had John Malkovich eating lobster on Vis, and its September 2020 round up put Lily Allen and David Harbour on Lastovo and Vis. Istria is the outlier, four hours north and a different trip, where Croatia Week reported Matthew McConaughey at the Meneghetti wine hotel in July 2022.
The line through all of it: the only cluster with real villa stock inside an hour of Split airport is Hvar, Brač and the Split riviera, the choice worked through in which island near Split is best for a villa week.
Where did the Beckhams stay in Croatia?
On Lopud, near Dubrovnik, in July 2022. Time Out Croatia, on 12 July 2022, described the family staying at a former monastery on the island and taking a boat out on the Adriatic. Croatia Week named it the next day, on 13 July 2022, reporting that they were staying at the Lopud 1483 complex, a former Franciscan monastery restored by Countess Francesca von Habsburg. Croatia Week reported again on 28 August 2023 that the family were back in the archipelago, photographed on Šipan near the Bowa restaurant alongside Luka Modrić and his family.
That is the whole verified answer, and the gap matters: none of the reports we could check names a rented villa. The closest thing to a house in any of them is a converted monastery on a car free island, which is a hotel.
What the reports describe is repeatable, and far cheaper than the names suggest. A small island with no cars, a boat most days, lunch somewhere you can only reach by water. Lopud and Šipan sit three to four hours from Split by road and boat. Want that shape rather than that postcode, and the Pakleni islands off Hvar do the same thing an hour from the airport.
Where do celebrities stay in Hvar?
On boats, and the reports say so themselves. The Hvar sightings that get published are arrivals into the town harbour, and the places named are restaurants and clubs rather than houses. Total Croatia News dated Prince Harry’s evening at Veneranda to 2011, Tom Cruise on the main square to 2013 and Bono at Palmižana to 2016. Croatia Week, on 23 June 2022, called Gariful on the Hvar town waterfront the favourite haunt of the rich and famous in Croatia, and listed diners over the years including Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Goldie Hawn, Charlize Theron, Rod Stewart and Jude Bellingham. Total Croatia News, on 26 October 2019, listed Jon Bon Jovi, Prince Albert of Monaco, Tommy Hilfiger and Neil Patrick Harris at the same restaurant in one summer.
Two things follow for a villa week. The famous version of Hvar is roughly two hundred metres of waterfront in Hvar town, and anyone can walk it and book a table on it. And there is no celebrity house to copy, because the reports are not about houses. Where the rental houses actually sit, village by village, is in where to stay on Hvar, and the week around one is villa concierge Hvar.
What do those places offer a normal villa week?
Four things, and only one of them is expensive.
The water is the same water. Palmižana, the Pakleni channel and the bays off Bol have no idea who is anchored in them. A day boat out of Hvar town reaches the same coves the yachts use, and the swimming stops are not reservable by anybody at any price.
The house does what a hotel cannot. Privacy, a kitchen, a terrace, and people arriving by boat rather than through a lobby is what a rented house gives eight to twenty people as standard. On this coast that is a five bedroom house with a pool, which sat between roughly EUR 950 and EUR 1,450 a night in high summer on the rates we checked in September 2026, divided by ten. Full bands, and what they come to per head, are in what a villa week in Croatia costs to rent, and none is a quote for your dates.
The boat is the real luxury, not the house. Every report above is a boat report. If the week has a budget decision in it between a larger house and a proper day on the water, take the water, which is what private boat charter and private boat tours from Hvar are for.
The staffed end is a different market, not a nicer version of the same one. Staffed houses here started around EUR 3,500 a night in high season on a four night minimum when we checked in September 2026, and published weekly rates at the very top of the Croatian market ran to roughly EUR 27,000 for a house sleeping eight. Nobody buys that on arithmetic.
Can you rent the same houses?
Sometimes, and it turns on which house. Several of the places named in the reports are hotels, and anyone can book those directly. Some are private houses let publicly for part of the year, and those do come up. Others are never let, and asking harder does not change it.
We do not keep a list of celebrity villas and would not trust one if somebody handed it to us. What we do is look at what is actually free for your dates and your group size, shortlist two or three real houses, and tell you plainly what each one gives up. You book the house with the villa’s own booking office at its published rate, and we arrange the week around it.
What should you send us?
Dates, how many of you, how many bedrooms, and one sentence on the week you want. If what appeals here is the shape rather than the names, say so. No cars, a boat most days, walking home from dinner, swimming from the house. Those are four different searches, and each narrows the coast quickly.
Send it through find a villa, request villa options, and we will come back with two or three houses that are genuinely free for your nights.
