Hvar Wedding Villas: What to Check Before You Book the House

Two Hvar houses on the same list, both stone, both with a pool: one takes a wedding of forty five for an extra EUR 1,500, the other bans large gatherings outright.

September 8, 2026 Hvar villa for a wedding

Two houses on the same Hvar villa list, both stone, both with a pool. One hosts weddings for an additional EUR 1,500. The other calls itself a perfect wedding venue and, lower down the same page, lists large gatherings as not allowed. Nothing in the pictures separates them. Everything below comes from Hvar listings, house rules and Croatian booking conditions read in September 2026, and none of it is a quote for your dates. Which village suits the week is settled in where to stay on Hvar. This one is about the house.

Can a villa on Hvar host a wedding at all?

Only if the owner has said so in writing, for your date and your number.

The booking conditions published across this coast agree. A private function at the property, a party, a wedding or a cocktail party, needs the owner’s prior permission, and additional charges or a larger security deposit may follow. They also cap the house at the number it is let for, infants included, and let the owner end the rental without refund if that is exceeded. A villa wedding is two permissions, then: the event, and the extra people.

The houses run the range.

The houseWhat its own rules say
Five bedrooms between Stari Grad and Vrboska, sleeps 12Weddings hosted for EUR 1,500 more, 45 people included, EUR 10 each above that, 80 the maximum. Large gatherings allowed
Four bedrooms at Humac, sleeps 14Sold in its own description as a perfect wedding venue. Large gatherings not allowed
Two villa complex near Hvar town, sleeps 20On-site parties or group events strictly prohibited
Ten bedrooms a kilometre from Hvar town, sleeps 16 plus 4Party groups not allowed, and a EUR 15,000 security deposit

Hours come from the same page rather than from the island. Croatian villa house rules we read set night quiet from 22:00 or 23:00 until 08:00, and one bans parties, hen and stag events and loud music without the owner’s approval in advance. Some houses also want a permit, which a planner handles.

So ask one thing before you fall for a photograph: will the owner confirm this dinner, on this date, in writing, and what does it add. A listing silent on events is not a yes.

Where on Hvar do wedding week villas sit?

Not where the pictures suggest. Of the Hvar villa lists published in September 2026, one had twenty one of its twenty four houses in Hvar town or on the slope above it; another nine near Hvar town, five around Jelsa, three near Stari Grad. The pool houses sit on that hill and in the fields behind Jelsa and Stari Grad. Inside the old town it is mostly stone houses with no pool and no parking.

A ceremony narrows it twice more. The road first. Stari Grad is about twenty minutes from Hvar town and Jelsa about thirty five, a taxi at the end of dinner rather than a problem. The south coast sits behind a one lane tunnel where traffic takes turns, a poor thing to put between forty guests and a seating plan.

Then the beds. The largest single houses we found on Hvar sleep twelve to sixteen, and the twenty person option near Hvar town is two sister villas side by side, which prohibit events anyway. Above about sixteen guests you are booking two houses, and the second has to be a walk away.

So fix the ceremony location first, look at houses within twenty minutes of it, and ask for the second house at the same time.

What should you check in the house itself?

What to checkWhy it decides the day
A flat terrace that seats your numberThe house that prices a wedding for forty five has a dining table for fourteen. The rest arrives on a lorry and needs level ground. Ask for its dimensions
Kitchen and service accessA chef cooking for forty needs a second worktop, a route to the terrace that misses the dancing, and a sink out of sight
Power and water outsideSockets on the terrace, and the nearest tap. Caterers plan around the answer if it comes early
Parking and drop-offPrivate parking secured is a line in some Hvar listings and missing from others. Count cars and minibuses, not spaces
Bedrooms for the couple and closest familyA quiet end of the house on the morning beats a bigger pool
A second house within walking distanceAbove sixteen guests, this is the shape the week takes
A room that works in bad weatherWind decides more days here than rain, and a house with no indoor table for your number has no fallback

Send that list to every house you shortlist, and treat unanswered questions as answers.

How far ahead, and for how many nights?

About a year when a wedding sits in the week, the market’s own published advice for weddings and big celebrations, against six to twelve months for a first choice villa week.

The nights catch people out. Five to seven is the summer standard, June to September. On Hvar we read a ten bedroom house near Hvar town holding seven nights from 1 July to 1 September and four outside that, and a pool house at Jelsa holding six in every season. One Hvar property that hosts weddings takes them only with exclusive use of the whole place, minimum two or three nights.

Money moves the same everywhere: about thirty per cent to confirm, the balance before arrival, a refundable damage deposit on top. Published conditions put that deposit at EUR 200 to EUR 300; the ten bedroom Hvar house holds EUR 15,000, and the event can raise it again.

Plan on a full week, and get the deposit percentage, the balance date and the damage deposit in writing before money moves. The calendar is in when to book a villa in Croatia.

What does the house cost against the rest of the week?

Coast wide, most five bedroom houses with a private pool run between about EUR 950 and EUR 1,450 a night in high summer, and Hvar sits at the upper end. A four bedroom pool house at Jelsa was EUR 800 a night from 1 July to 31 August on the rate card we read in September 2026. The full picture is in what a villa week in Croatia costs to rent.

Four things land on the house, not the wedding budget. The event fee where a house publishes one, EUR 1,500 on the only Hvar example we found. A charge per head above the included number, EUR 10 on that house. Cleaning, and a damage deposit the event may enlarge. Tourist tax, for 2026 EUR 1.80 per person per night in Jelsa and Stari Grad and EUR 2.00 in Hvar town.

Almost no Hvar house publishes a wedding rate, so ask for the total for your exact nights with the event fee named inside it. Two houses that look identical per night finish EUR 1,500 apart the moment you say the word wedding.

We are not wedding planners and do not pretend to be. The split is set out on Hvar elopements and small weddings and Croatia wedding concierge. If you have a planner we work alongside them; if not, we will point you at ones we trust.

We only put forward houses whose owner has confirmed the event in writing, which makes a wedding shortlist slower to build than a family one. If a planner is involved, say so and we will copy them in.

What should you send us?

The dates or the month, how many nights, how many sleep in the house and how many come to the dinner, whether the ceremony location is fixed, whether a planner is involved, the area if you have settled one, and the budget for the house. If the dinner is larger than the house sleeps, put that first. It decides which houses can be asked at all.

We come back with two or three houses that fit, each with the total for your nights, the minimum stay, what sits on top, and the owner’s position on the event. You book the house with the villa’s own booking office at its published rate, and we arrange the boat days, the chef and the drivers around it. Chef nights sit on private chef for an Hvar villa, the island week on villa concierge Hvar.

FAQ

Guide questions

Can you hold a wedding at a villa on Hvar?

At some houses yes, at many no, and the difference is written down rather than settled on the day. The booking conditions published for this coast in September 2026 say that a private function at the property, a party, a wedding or a cocktail party, needs the owner's prior permission, and that additional charges or an increased security deposit may follow at the owner's discretion. Among the Hvar houses we read, one states that weddings can be hosted for an additional fee of EUR 1,500 with up to forty five people included, and three others say variously that large gatherings are not allowed, that on-site parties or group events are strictly prohibited, and that party groups are not allowed. Nothing in the photographs tells you which house you are looking at, so get the owner's written yes for your date and your number before anything is held.

How many guests can a villa on Hvar host for a dinner?

Fewer than the island's venues, and the number the owner will confirm matters more than the number the terrace could physically hold. The one Hvar house we read with a published event policy sleeps twelve, includes forty five people in its wedding fee and caps events at eighty. For comparison, Hvar's commercial wedding venues published capacities in September 2026 of up to about 250 at the beach club, 120 to 130 at the fortress, 80 at one hotel and 70 at another, and one resort keeps three villas for weddings of up to twenty. So a villa dinner on Hvar is usually a thirty to fifty person affair at the outside. Above that you are hiring a venue and using the house to sleep the family.

Do villas on Hvar allow events?

A minority do, and they say so in the same house rules that other houses use to say no. On one Hvar list read in September 2026, a five bedroom house between Stari Grad and Vrboska lists large gatherings as allowed and prices a wedding at EUR 1,500 extra. On the same list, a four bedroom house at Humac describes itself as a perfect wedding venue and lists large gatherings as not allowed. Elsewhere, a two villa complex near Hvar town states that on-site parties or group events are strictly prohibited, and a ten bedroom house a kilometre from the centre says party groups are not allowed. Silence in a listing is not permission.

How far ahead should you book a wedding villa on Hvar?

About a year, which is the market's own published advice for a wedding or a big celebration, against six to twelve months for a first choice villa week. Two things go before the house: the date, which the ceremony location and the registrar or celebrant fix, and the head count for the dinner, which decides whether one house can work at all. The nights are long on Hvar in summer. A ten bedroom house near Hvar town holds seven nights from 1 July to 1 September and four outside that, a house at Humac holds seven nights all year, and five to seven nights is the summer standard across this coast.

Do you plan the wedding itself?

No. The ceremony, the celebrant, the legal paperwork, the florals and the styling stay with your planner or celebrant, and we say so before you ask. What we do is the week around it: finding the house and shortlisting two or three that will actually take the event, the boat days, the chef dinners, the drivers and the guest arrivals. If you have a planner we work alongside them. If you do not have one yet, we will point you at ones we trust.

Can wedding guests who are not staying at the villa come to the dinner?

Only with the owner's agreement, and it is a separate question from whether the wedding is allowed. The published conditions we read say that only the people named at the time of booking may use the property without prior agreement, that the maximum number of people allowed at the property, infants included, may not be exceeded, and that the owner may end the rental without notice and without a refund if it is. The Hvar house with a published event policy includes forty five people and charges EUR 10 for each additional person. So count the whole guest list rather than the beds, and get that number written into the booking.
